Aviation Standard parts, or AS standard parts, are those that have been designed and produced in a way that complies with a given set of standards or criteria as set out by the United States government or other authority. AS parts are not particularly federally regulated, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has set out a non-regulatory definition of what constitutes an “aerospace standard” part. AS parts must be designed, manufactured, tested, and meet uniform identification by following an industry or United States government criteria. The manufacturer would then need to specify how the component is to be manufactured from materials to process.

Despite there not being a federally mandated regulation on AS standard parts, the FAA will often oversee the manufacturer of the standard parts to ensure that they are installed correctly and audits may be made by customers to see how the manufacturers are meeting criteria. Across the industry, there are a few standards, including National Aerospace Standard (NAS), Army-Navy Aeronautical Standard (AN), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Join Electronic Device Engineering Council, Joint Electron Tube Engineering Counsel, and American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
