About McDonnell Douglas:
McDonnell Douglas has made one of the biggest names for themselves in the aerospace business naming themselves the nation's second largest defense contractor, one of the only two U.S builders of commercial jetliners and one of Southern California's biggest industrial employers. McDonnell Douglas was a major American aerospace manufacturing corporation and defense contractor formed by James Smith McDonnell and Donald Willis Douglas in a merger of McDonnell Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft Company April 28th, 1967. McDonnell Douglas corporation was based at St. Louis Lambert International Airport near St. Louis, Missouri, While its headquarters for its subsidiary, the McDonnell Douglas Technical Services Company, were established in St. Louis County, Missouri. Before the merger of the two companies both had great success in many departments therefore equalling the achievements of their latter company McDonnell Douglas. Some examples include Douglas Aircraft Company creating DC-3 the world's first successful commercial airliner which became a long staple on airline routes after its introduction in 1935. During WWII, Douglas converted the DC-3 to military use as the C-47, and that plane became the most widely used transport aircraft during the war. Meanwhile McDonnell Aircraft designed the world's first carrier-based jet fighter and went on to produce such widely used jet fighters as the F-4 Phantom, A-4 Skyhawk, F-15 Eagle, and F-18 Hornet.
